Fall Events! Join us for new original performances

Maine Inside Out’s hosted “Juneteenth Ain’t Enough” with over 40 partners, collaborators, and community members this June in Lewiston’s Kennedy Park

This fall, generations of Maine Inside Out artists will share new original work. These performances will happen in schools, within prison walls, and in community spaces.  Maine Inside Out has a long history of moving between these spaces and connecting people across boundaries with art.

From schools to prisons, the paradigm of punishment ripples through families and generations. When someone is isolated or incarcerated it impacts them personally as well as their family and community. We are missing people - friends, parents, siblings, children, mentors, elders, leaders and so many more. Maine Inside Out artists are building a new cycle of connection and leadership across boundaries and generations. Join us this Fall for original performances and community dialogue about our visions for community change.

Mountain View Correctional Facility Workshops

Members of the Mountain View theater troupe work on an audio track for the new performance with MIO staff member Tyler Jackson and filmmaker Silas Hagerty

Since August, a troupe of incarcerated artists at Mountain View Correctional Facility has been creating a new original performance. This is MIO's first theater project inside a correctional facility since 2019. The workshops were initiated and organized by a group of experienced MIO participants who are incarcerated at Mountain View. On November 2, the troupe will debut the new play for peers and facility staff. On November 9, the play debuts to the public followed by a dialogue with the artists. Join us for the performance at Mountain View or to watch the live stream in person at the MIO Lewiston Site!

Lewiston Middle School Workshops

Maine Inside Out student participants from Lewiston Middle School gather at the MIO Community Site on Lisbon Street for a completion celebration in June.

Maine Inside Out has started a second cycle of workshops in Lewiston Middle School. Two groups of eighth grade students will debut original performances in December for audiences of peers, families, school staff and community. The workshops are facilitated by former Maine Inside Out artists and performers who are mentoring the next generations in their community to create theater for social change.

In August, the facilitation team visited the Cobscook Institute in August to lead a theater of the oppressed workshop for staff and high school students. While in Washington County, the team visited the beautiful coastline of Maine’s bold coast and watched the sun rise over the most northeast corner of the country.
